  • Daniel Dolan you are the MAN!

Daniel Dolan

British Dance Wonder Joins The Bolshoi Ballet

8:34am UK, Friday May 08, 2009

A 16-year-old dancer is heading for Russia to join the Bolshoi Ballet Academy after a mystery benefactor stepped in to pay his £12,000 fees.

Daniel's journey has been compared to the Billy Elliott story

Daniel Dolan is only the third British male ever to be accepted into the prestigious school in its 233-year history.

Daniel started ballet at the age of four and has attended the Hammond School of Performing Arts in Cheshire since he was eleven, but he told Sky News he is astonished at his success.

"All we did was my sister filmed me and I did an amateur edit, and that was it. It's absolutely amazing and fills me with joy. I know I'll have to work hard but I'm really looking forward to it."

The Bolshoi Academy in Moscow is regarded as the toughest ballet training school in the world, with its male dancers known for their strength and power.

"It makes you realise there are nice people out there"

Daniel's mother, Carol

Daniel and his family have no idea who has donated his entrance fees, or why.

Daniel's mother, Carol, said: "It makes you realise there are nice people out there. We would have really struggled to send Daniel to Moscow without his help."

The teenager has won scholarships for his dance training so far, and his journey has been compared to Billy Elliott - the story of a young boy who overcame the odds to become a ballet dancer.

"I don't mind at all," Daniel says of that. "Billy Elliott worked really hard and so have I - it shows you can achieve whatever you want if you work hard."

  • Charles Dickens's Evaluation

His Evaluation
     I. As a writer of problem novels
Dickens is the most popular of all English novelists, he never lost his sympathy for the poor and the mistreated.  His best novels are those of victims of the slums, the poor work mouses, and debtor's prisons.  In his novels he did much to  call public attention to slum conditions and miseries of the lower strata of English society.
     II. Secrets of his success
Dickens has excessive imagination, which made good stories out of incidents which ordinarily pass unnoticed.  He has extreme sensibility, which findd realief only in tears and laughter.  He is sentimental, especially over children and outcasts.  He fights against injustice ; he champions the weak against the strong ; he gives courange to the faint; and hope to the weary in heart.  He keeps colse to the reading public, studying its tastes and pleasing it.  If pleasing the public is an art, Dickens is one of the greatest artists.  In this point, we find him a parallel with Shakespeare because both of them won their success by studying and plessing the public.
     III. His view on society

Dickens always emphasize the fact that this is an excellent world, only some errors have crept into it due to thoughlessness and this can be easily remedied by a little human sympathy, he often excuses the individual in view of the faults of society.  He also thinks that innocent suffering and crime are due more to conditions than to bad character.

  • Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens (1812-1870)
Forword:
Charles Dickens powerfully interested in various reforms.
(poor family background in comparision with Tennyson and Browing)

When we compare Dickens's life and work with that of Tennyson and Browining, we will find the contrast was startling, while Tennyson and Browing were being educated for the life of literature and being protected from the hardships of the world.  Dickens, a poor, obsure, suffering child, had to support his family by pasting lalels on blacking bottles, sleeping under a counter like a homeless cat, and once a week timidly approaching the big prison where his father was confined for debts.

His Life:
     I. 2nd of 8 kinds.
II. At 11, the family moved to London
III. Family in debt and father in prison.
     IV. A small legacy
     V. At 15, went to work again.
     VI. "Sketches by Boz"
     VII. "Pickwick Papers"
     VIII. Other novels
IX. His popularity began to fall.
Dickens was the second of eight poor children, and his father was a minor official in the navy, who could hardly make both ends meet, when Dickens was nine years old, the family moved to London, but debts still pursued his father and then he ended up in the prison for debts.  At 11, Dickens was taken out of school and went to work in the cellar of a blacking factory, he worked from dawn till dark just for a few pennies.   Then a small legacy ended his wretchedness, bringing his father from the prison and sending the boy to Wellington House Academy, but this was a brutal, worthless school, where her leamed little.  At 15, he left the school again, but this time he worked as a clerk in a lawyer's office, by night, he studied shorghand, intending to reporter.  At23, he publishe"Sketches by Boz," his first book.  "Pickwick Papers" his best known work was published serially in 1836-1837, Dickens's fame and fortune were made.  "Pickweick Papers" was rapidly followed by "Olive Twist,"which contains a large amount of autobiography. He supplied his school days for "Nicholas Nickleby;" His visits to the Marshal sea, a place where his father was imprisoned, for "Little dorrit; " His life in a lawyer's office for"Bleak House." Money poured into his pocket from thses novels.  In 1842, while still a young man, he was invited to visit the United States and Canada.  He was received as the guest of the nation, at that time American was a huge fairyland, Dickens recorded his impressions in American Notes and martin Chuzzlewit.  But these two books struck a false note, and he began to lose something of his popularity, besides, he spent more than he earned, his domestic life became more and moe irritating until he separated from his wife in 1858. He journeyed to Italy, but was disappoined, he then turned back to London Streets.  He died in 1870 and was buried in Westminster Abbey.

His Novels
     I. His puppose novels
     II. Other novels
    III. Christmas stories
We should note that most of Dickens's novels belong to the class of purpose novels or problem novels, for example, his"Bleak House" attacks the "law's delay; " "Little Dorrit" attacks the injustice which persecutes the poor debtors; "Nicholas Nickleby" attacks the abuses of charity school and the brutal school teacher. "Oliver twist" deals with the unnecessary degradation of the poor in English workhouses. "The Old Curiostity Shop" deals with the evil of gambling and the effect it can have on the individual. "Martin Chuzzlewit" deals with selfishness as a central theme. "Hard Times" deals with the grinding existence of industrial workers.  "Great Expectations" attacks snobbishness and ingratitude.
"A Tale of Two Cities" is the result of Dickens's reading of Carlyle's the "French Revolution." "David Copperfield" offers us a glimpse of Dickens' boyhood and family. "Pickwick Papers" is just a novel for fun.
Dickens wrote some Christmas Stories, such as "Christmas Carol," "The Chimnes" "The Cricket on the Hearth." It is due to the help of thsees stories that Christmas has become in all English -countries a season of gladness, a season of gift giving, a season of remembering those less fortunate than ourselves.

  • Victorian Novels

Forword:
What the metrical romance was to the Middlepages, what the drama was to the age of Elizabeth, the novel was to the age of Victoria, in this period, all forms of literature continued to flourish and the total number of books published increased rapidly as education was extended and readinf public was multiplied, but the rate of the growth of the novel far supaassed all the other kinds.

I. Division of the Victorian novelists
     A. early Victorian novelists
     B. Later Victorian novelists.
William Make peace Thankeray was born in 1811, Charles Dickens in 1812, Charlotte Bronte in 1816, Emily Bronte in 1818, George Eliot in 1819.
Vanity Fair (浮華世界)---Thankeray / Jane Eyre---Charlotte Bronte / Wughering Heights---Emily Bronte
These are the names which first come to our mind when we think of the Victorian novelists, and we classify them as the early Victorian novelists.
The later Victorian novelists include George Meredith who was born in 1828, his masterpeice is "Egoist."  Samuel Butler was born in 1835, his masterpeice is "The Way of All Flesh(眾生之道)."  Thmas Hardy was born in 1840.

II. A comparision between the two divisions
The early Victorian novelists wrote under a special climate of ideas and feelings, they were one with the reading public to quite a remarkable degree; they were conditioned by it. THey identified themselves with their age; they were its spokesmen.  The late Victorian novelists wrote against thir age; they were critical, and even hostile. Their relation to the reading public was nearer to the 20th century than to the Victorian Age.

III. The novel of prupose
The Victorian novel was a realistic penetration of life.  In this age of concern over the problems of greater number of people, the realistic novel came to be a vehicle of social betterment.
The novelists wrote with a definite social purpose. They took up the novel of manners from Jane Austen and gave it a wider scope, and this is known to us as the"novel of purpose" or "purpose novel" or "problem novel." So, the Victorian novel served not only as a literary enterainment, but also a medium for influencing opinion.

  • Endymion

                         Endymion and Selene
Endymion, a youth king or hunter or shepherd of surpassing beauty, is loved by the Goddess of the Moon, Selene. For this reason, the Goddess made him slumber forever to own him.
Some of the poets say he was a king, some a hunter, butmost of them say he was a shepherd. All poets are agree that he was a youth of surpassing beauty.
In all the stories about him he sleeps forever, immortal, but never conscious.  It is said that this magic slumber was Selene doing.  She lulled him to sleep so that she might always find him and caress him as she pleased.  But is is asid, too, that her passion brings her only a burden of pain, fraught with many sighs.
Selene, in the later poets, Artemis is identified with Hecate. She is "the goddess with three forms," Selene in the sky, Artemison earth, Hecate in the lower world and in thw world above when it is wrapped in darkness.
